The Nigerian federal government, in partnership with the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), is launching an initiative to revive the country’s cotton industry, aiming to create over 1.4 million jobs annually in the cotton and textile sector. This effort aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s industrialization agenda.
Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasized the need for a concrete roadmap for revitalizing the sector during a meeting with ICAC’s Executive Director, Eric Trachtenberg. He highlighted the importance of moving from discussion to action, stating, “It is time to work more and talk less.”The initiative will focus on enhancing key components of the cotton value chain, including farming, weaving, and ginning, to ensure a comprehensive development of the industry.
This revival is seen as a critical step towards boosting the economy and providing employment opportunities in Nigeria.
