Thousands of people marched in Kolkata on Thursday, protesting the brutal rape and murder of a local doctor, which has ignited nationwide outrage and demands for justice and better safety for women. The incident, reminiscent of the infamous 2012 Delhi bus rape case, has highlighted India’s ongoing struggle with gender-based violence.
The 31-year-old doctor was found dead at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to condemn the atrocity and call for swift punishment for the perpetrators. In his Independence Day address, he expressed the nation’s anger over violence against women, emphasizing the need for quick investigations and severe penalties for such crimes.
Protests have erupted across the country, with doctors halting elective services in solidarity and demanding improved security measures. The case has now been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) due to public dissatisfaction with the police’s handling of the investigation.
Demonstrators in Kolkata carried signs reading “We want justice” and “Hang the rapist, save the women,” while candlelight vigils coincided with the start of India’s Independence Day celebrations. The protests reflect a growing frustration among citizens over the persistent issue of violence against women in India.
