The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Lagos State Chapter, has strongly refuted a recent media report alleging that healthcare workers demand bribes before providing services. This report, based on a survey by the National Bureau of Statistics and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, claimed that 42% of health workers received bribes, but the association described these allegations as unfounded and damaging to the nursing profession.
In a statement, NANNM Chairperson Christianah Adeboboye emphasized the association’s commitment to ethical practices and called for a retraction and thorough investigation into the claims made in the report. She highlighted that such accusations undermine the hard work and integrity of healthcare professionals who strive to provide quality care despite challenging circumstances.
The association’s response aligns with similar sentiments expressed by other healthcare organizations, including the Nigerian Medical Association, which also criticized the report for misrepresenting the integrity of medical professionals in Nigeria. The NANNM urged the public to recognize the dedication of nurses and midwives in their commitment to patient care and ethical standards.
