The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has reported that its national headquarters, known as Rights House, in Ikeja, Lagos, was invaded by the Nigerian Police early Friday morning. This police action prevented occupants from entering the building and disrupted an Education Rights Campaign Symposium scheduled to take place there.
In a statement issued by CDHR National President Comrade Debo Adeniran and National Publicity Secretary Comrade Idris Olayinka, it was noted that the police laid siege to the headquarters, arriving with several Hilux vans to block access. The CDHR has called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Lagos State Police Commissioner to intervene and stop what they describe as a violation of the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech. They emphasized that the police’s actions constitute a gross infringement on these fundamental rights and demanded an immediate cessation of such interference with lawful gatherings.
