The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has summoned Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, the acting Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, due to concerns regarding poor project execution. This decision follows a recent inspection where the committee identified significant discrepancies between the reported status of various projects and their actual conditions, particularly in financial management.
Committee chairperson Abubakar Fulata stated that the invitation is not intended as a witch-hunt but rather a necessary step to ensure transparency and accountability within the university’s management. He expressed concerns over the university’s financial practices, noting that the reported generation of N1.5 billion in revenue contrasted sharply with claims of spending approximately N3 billion, raising questions about the legitimacy of these figures.
The committee highlighted specific issues, including the complete payment for projects that were reported as less than 40% complete, which violates financial regulations. Prof. Arinze-Umobi has been asked to present relevant documents during her appearance at the National Assembly to facilitate further review and legislative action.
