The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed that floods affecting ten local government areas in Niger State have resulted in the loss of seven lives. Alhaji Abdullahi Baba Arah, the director general of NSEMA, stated that the agency is actively working to mitigate the impact of flooding during the 2024 rainy season. He urged residents living near the banks of Rivers Niger and Kaduna to relocate and cease activities around the riverbanks to ensure their safety.
The floods have been attributed to heavy rainfall in the region, which has led to increased water levels and subsequent flooding. NSEMA is focused on providing assistance and implementing measures to prevent further casualties as the rainy season progresses.
