President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Rena Wakama, the head coach of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team D’Tigress, for being named the Best Coach of Women’s Basketball at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The recognition by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) highlights Wakama’s exceptional leadership and dedication to excellence.
Under the 32-year-old coach’s guidance, D’Tigress made history by becoming the first African basketball team, male or female, to reach the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games. The team put up a spectacular performance, stunning world number three Australia in their opening game and securing an impressive victory against world number five Canada in their final group match.
Despite their eventual loss to the USA in the quarter-finals, D’Tigress’ journey to the last eight was a testament to Wakama’s strategic prowess and the team’s resilience. President Tinubu commended the coach, the team, and all those who played a part in this unprecedented feat, urging them to remain resilient and determined for greatness.
The President affirmed that while winning trophies and medals is the ultimate goal in competitive sports, good sportsmanship, discipline, and sacrifice shown by the Nigerian contingent at the Olympics are equally important. He thanked the team and wished them success in their future endeavors.
Wakama’s achievement is particularly noteworthy as she is also the first Nigerian female coach to win the women’s Afrobasket title since the tournament’s inception in 1966.
