EFCC, UBA, Fidelity to Pay Benue Govt N100M
Court has ordered the EFCC, Union and Fidelity banks to pay to jointly pay N100 million to Benue State government for “illegally freezing the accounts of the state government last year”.
The Court specifically directed the EFCC to pay Benue State government N50 million as damages while the two banks were ordered N25 million each.
The Court maintained that the freezing of Benue State Government accounts does not fall within the category of accounts liable to be frozen by the anti-graft agency.
The Court also granted an order of perpetual injunction restraining the EFCC from further freezing State Government’s accounts domiciled in financial institutions.
The EFCC had frozen the Benue State Government accounts following the Governor’s defection from the APC to the PDP.
