30 Years After, The World Wide Web Rules

It’s been 30 years since Tim Berners-Lee invented a system that enables an interconnection of computers from diverse ends of the world- a system he aptly called the World Wide Web (www).

The British scientist- Berners-Lee- who at the time was a staff researcher at the European Organization for Nuclear Science submitted a proposal to his boss for system of computers that connect and interact with one another in real time as a means of aiding the institution’s research agenda.

Tuesday March 12th 2019, the inventor made a video message to mark the anniversary of the internet- accessing progress made since 1989 when the internet went mainstream and some of the difficulties arising from restrictions and denial of right to internet usage in several countries of the world.

A part of his message read thus: “Today, 30 years on from my original proposal for an information management system, half the world is online, It’s a moment to celebrate how far we’ve come but also an opportunity to reflect on how far we have yet to go.”

The web has since become an inevitable tool for businesses, government and research institutions. Lee’s invention has lead to the creation of several multi-trillion dollar businesses in social media, e-commerce and education.
