The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over a purported plan to deregister some political parties.
Although INEC had yet to speak of plan to deregister any political, there had been calls in some quarters for it to do so.
However, CUPP said the Commission lacked the power to deregister any political party yet because of a clause in the amemded constitution.
“INEC will forever be held legally hostage from deregistering any political parties becuase of the inability of some governors to conduct LGA elections which is required by the amended constitution before INEC can decide to wield the big stick against any party that did not win LGA or councillorship seat or score some percent in LGA election. So brothers and sisters go to sleep and ignore the noise makers,” CUPP said in a statement.
INEC registered 91 political parties before the 2019 general elections.
