There are uncertainties concerning the fate of the owner of the collapsed Lagos building and his daughters as according to his son- Erinoluwa Akinmoladun- his father and siblings were still at home when he left the house earlier today.
The young man has since joined the ongoing rescue efforts at the site of the tragedy. He informed newsmen that the building has had structural defects for awhile but it did not occur to anyone that a collapse was imminent.
Speaking at the scene of the collapse, Governor Akinwunmi who arrived at 2:50pm announced that buildings within the area would be subjected to intense integrity tests in the days ahead- stating that any building that shows structural defects would be demolished without delay.
An eyewitness at the scene of the incident who spoke to reporters on the condition of anonymity revealed that the building had twice been marked for demolition. Allegations are rife on social media that the town planning authorities and city development officials may have been compromised into abandoning their duties.
Rescue workers are battling through the rubble to save the victims. Emergency medical services are also on ground to offer assistance to the rescued. So far, 10 persons have been confirmed dead and 23 others rescued.
