Jerry Gana, the former Minister of Information and National Orientation has urged the National Assembly and political parties to hold the President Buhari-led administration and other members of the executive arm of government accountable for constitutional breaches.
During the inauguration of the Nigerian Prize for Leadership in Abuja on Thursday, Gana said that any government that does not respect the rule of law has failed. He charged that politicians should ensure that the government conducts its activities under the rule of law irrespective of the provision of infrastructure.
Gana said that in terms of governance, the first step of holding the government accountable is through the legislative arm of government by ensuring they play their constitutional role.
“They should be there for the people to make sure that government governs under the law and according to the needs of Nigerians and govern excellently, effectively and with transparency. The security and welfare of the people is the primary responsibility of the government,” he added.
However, he said that the fabrics of Nigerians society had been deeply shaken and could become worse if urgent actions like the NPL initiative, were not taken.
