Ese Brume Reclaims Africa Women’s Long Jump Title

Tokyo 2020 Olympics bronze medallist Ese Brume has reclaimed her Africa women’s long jump title, her fourth overall, at the ongoing 2024 Africa Senior Athletics Championship on Sunday.

Brume secured the title with a 6.73m jump on her last attempt, edging out Burkina Faso’s Marthe Koala, who led with 6.72m after five attempts.

This victory adds to Brume’s titles from 2014 (Marrakesh), 2016 (Durban), and 2018 (Asaba). Despite not meeting the 6.86m 2024 Olympics qualification standard, Brume still holds a ticket to Paris by ranking. Nigeria’s Prestina Ochonogor also competed, finishing fourth with a jump of 6.28m.

In the women’s high jump final, Nigeria’s Temitope Adeshina won silver, clearing 1.84m, behind Ghana’s Rose Yeboah, who won gold with 1.87m. Samuel Ogazi claimed bronze in the men’s 400m final, finishing in 45.47s, while new national champion Dubem Amene finished seventh in 46.27s.

Nigeria’s new women’s 400m champion, Esther Joseph, also won bronze with a time of 51.94s. South Africa’s Miranda Coetzee took gold in 51.16s, and Qincy Malekani of Zambia won silver in 51.56s.
