Despite experiencing defeats in two out of their three games at the recently concluded FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Antwerp, Belgium, D’Tigress standout, Sarah Ogoke, remains adamant that the women’s national basketball team remains a formidable force, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Despite the setbacks, D’Tigress secured qualification for the women’s basketball event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris by securing a victory in Antwerp.
Ogoke and her fellow teammates put in a determined effort to secure a 72-65 triumph over Senegal in their opening match of the qualifying tournament, marking a typical hard-fought encounter between the two nations.
However, Rena Wakama’s squad suffered a heavy 100-46 defeat to the reigning world champions, the USA, on Friday. Nevertheless, their Olympic qualification was confirmed shortly afterward when Belgium defeated Senegal.
In their final match against the host nation Belgium on Sunday, the African champions succumbed to a 78-61 loss against the reigning European champions.
Ogoke was unable to participate in the game against Belgium as she was granted leave to be with her father, who is battling cancer.
“My father has been unwell for some time, which is why winning this game at this tournament means so much to me. Many people are fighting cancer out there, and it’s a tough battle, but anything is possible,” remarked the seasoned guard following the match against Senegal.
