Six individuals from Nigeria are embarking on a quest to break the Guinness World Record for the longest Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) videogame marathon.
The team, consisting of Kolade Daniel (the convener), Fifehanmi Oladimeji, Emmanuel Awe, David Igbeneghu, Ifeanyi Iwelumo, and Kingsley Banney, announced their intention through a social media post. The event, which will span three days, is scheduled to take place at the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 in Lagos from December 22 to 24, 2023.
The main objective of this record attempt is to showcase the potential of the intersection between football and gaming, not only as a source of personal enjoyment but also as a pathway to professional opportunities.
Kolade Daniel expressed their motivation, stating, “We are merging our love for football and our favorite football video game pastime in our record attempt,” highlighting that gaming is gaining popularity as a career choice in their region. Fifehanmi Oladimeji added that their endeavor aims to dispel stereotypes and demonstrate the possibilities available to Nigerian gamers.
As of now, it is unclear whether the Guinness World Records organization is aware of their attempt. The current record for the longest marathon playing a Pro Evolution Soccer game stands at 40 hours, achieved by T-Mobile in Vienna, Austria, from June 19 to 25, 2015, with players Mirza Jahic, Michael Hambrusch, and Phillip Oppeneiger successfully completing the full game.
