In a unanimous decision, the US Supreme Court has rejected an attempt to limit access to the abortion pill mifepristone, a key component of medication abortion, BBC reports.
The ruling, which comes two years after the court rescinded the nationwide guarantee to an abortion, was welcomed by pro-choice activists.
The plaintiffs, a group of anti-abortion doctors and activists known as the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, argued that the US Food and Drug Administration should withdraw approval for the drug.
However, the court determined that the plaintiffs did not have the legal standing to sue, as they failed to demonstrate any actual injury resulting from the availability of the drug. According to BBC, President Joe Biden and pro-choice groups have emphasized that the fight for reproductive freedom is ongoing.
It adds that abortion is expected to be a prominent issue in upcoming elections, particularly for Republicans balancing the views of their base with broader support for abortion access.
