A Makadara court in Nairobi, Kenya, released two Nigerian men on Thursday who were being held over the murder of university student Rita Waeni Muendo. The court’s decision came despite the fact that the DNA test results were not yet available.
The magistrate, Agnes Mwangi, directed the suspects to report to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) every Wednesday pending the outcome of the DNA tests. The police were also ordered to release the suspects’ phones.
The pair, William Ovie Opia and Johnbull Asbor, were suspected of killing and dismembering Waeni’s body in an apartment on TRM Drive, Kasarani, before disappearing with her head. The suspects were living in Kenya illegally, according to investigations by the DCI.
